They offer group classes of many different ability levels so you can find a class to suit your experience and you don’t need to feel put off by the idea of being surrounded by strapping body builders as with most gyms, this simply isn’t the case.

Group exercise classes include a range of different types of exercise from calming and breathing techniques to gentle aerobics to more rigorous circuit training. As you become more familiar with your chosen class you will soon see how much fun and enjoyment can be garnered from exercising and keeping fit.

One of the finest features of the leisure facilities available at this centre is the pay as you go option that gym goers are offered. This option means you can choose to pay for your sessions by the day and avoid costly membership or join up fees. It’s a great idea if you’re keeping an eye on your cash or want to try out the centre before committing to it on a full time basis. What’s more, you can purchase as many one day passes as you like so if you only use this centre on an occasional basis it’s absolutely ideal.

East Ham Leisure Club

With the opening of the new gym extension at East Ham Leisure Centre, locals and visitors can now enjoy state-of-the-art exercise equipment as well as the large range of activities and classes available at this venue. We take a look at just some of what is on offer.

East Ham Leisure Centre runs a wide variety of exercise sessions, designed to motivate people at all levels and to make exercise fun. One of the more unusual activities available is Bhangra Aerobics; a fast, enjoyable workout set to the lively sound of Bhangra, the music developed by the British Punjabi community and now very popular across many cultures. There is also Bollywood aerobics for another variation on the theme. Classes run on Mondays and Wednesdays, with the Wednesday session for new starters. Another unusual class for younger residents is Ballet Babes, helping improve strength, stamina and co-ordination for the 4-15 year age groups. East Ham Leisure Centre also offers many more conventional exercise classes, such as Bums, Tums and Thighs, Yoga, various types of aerobics and kickboxing.

If you want to visit East Ham Leisure Centre without committing to membership, go to www.payasugym.com where you can buy a single-use pass.

East Ham Leisure Centre is just half a mile from East Ham tube station, and five buses pass the main entrance which is on Barking Road. There are only 14 parking spaces at the centre, four of which are reserved for disabled users, but there is public and pay and display parking available nearby.

The main swimming pool at the centre is 25 metres long, and there is also a smaller teaching pool. Water slides and spectator seating are available at the pool, so proud parents can watch the children compete in galas, or simply hurtle down slides. There is a pool hoist and wheelchair access to the poolside, as well as accessible changing areas. The centre is part of the ‘Swim London’ scheme which covers over 40 pools across the city for one monthly fee.

An air-conditioned gym provides a range of equipment including treadmills, step machines and free weights. New equipment installed in February 2012 includes a combined stepper and cross trainer, a machine to provide a workout similar to skating or skiing, accessible treadmills and a dedicated fitness suite. Gym users must complete a one-off induction, after which they are free to use all the machines.

Climbing wall enthusiasts are well catered for with a choice of over sixty routes of differing grades – and for those who have no idea what this means, there are taster and beginner sessions to allow you to have a try at this fascinating sport. East Ham Leisure Centre is part of the ‘Climb London’ network which covers most of the capital.

The centre offers a wide variety of membership options; ‘wellness’ passes are available for seniors, children and teenagers, as well as an enhanced premium membership. All Borough of Newham residents are entitled to a free ‘pay and play’ card which gives them discounts on activities. Disabled adults are entitled to the ‘Inclusive London’ membership which covers all-hours access to most facilities at leisure centres in the five Olympic boroughs (including East Ham Leisure Centre) and also admits their carers for free.
